Established in 1990, originally as the Symbiosis Institute of Journalism & Communication (SIJC), the Institute was renamed in 1999 as the Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC) to enable the Institute to go beyond journalism and introduce other media-related courses in the curriculum in keeping with industry requirements. SIMC has evolved into a leading media and communication education and training Institute, providing the industry with trained and competent professionals.

Interior of the seven-storeyed Symbiosis campus

Once again in 2007, in keeping with the industry's diversely evolving needs, the name was changed to Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication. SIMC also moved to a new 30,000 sq ft campus. The new name seamlessly blends the Media as a vehicle, and Communication as a function, and does justice to all forms of communication-driven initiatives.
SIMC's method of training involves regular theoretical inputs in the classroom, ongoing evaluation of academic performance, practical inputs in the various laboratories, alongwith concurrent real-time industry projects and internships. This ensures that SIMC trainees are sought after by the industry.
During the past year, another far significant milestone in SIMC's progress has been its inclusion in the ambit of the Symbiosis International University. Next year, SIMC will move to a new 300-acre residential campus, replete with international standard facilities and amenities.
From a vocational training Institute, SIMC is now poised to become a media and communication research Institute.

Campus and Location

In the middle of this year (2007) SIMC moved from the original Symbiosis campus on the Senapati Bapat Road to a large new building at Viman Nagar. The new building has won a national award for the most innovative and creative design for an educational campus.

Viman Nagar, named because of its proximity to the civil and defence airports, and the residential enclave for IAF personnel, is situated off the Pune-Ahmednagar highway, locally referred to as the 'Nagar Road'. The area is adjacent to Yerawada, which is famous for its high-security Central Jail, and also to the upmarket Kalyani-nagar and Koregaon Park (Osho commune) areas.
While the new under graduate course (Bachelors in Media Studies) shall be initiated in 2008 in the current Viman Nagar Campus, the post graduate Masters courses are expected to shift to the picturesque new Lavale campus.
